  1. No, but if your songs aren’t purchased through iTunes, you’ll no longer be able to sync music back and forth from your new computer. If they are, there are methods of recovering your old music from your old computer.
Try requesting help via apple, they’re usually pretty good about helping with this kind of stuff.

  2. I’ve restored my computer a couple times and so I have experience with getting my songs from the iPod.

When you plug in the ipod, it normally will have a box that says that your computer’s iTunes library doesn’t match your iPod’s library and whether you want to erase and sync to the computer’s library. If you do choose this option, you *will* lose the songs except for purchased ones. However, you can add the songs to the computer. Depending on your ipod, there are different methods you can use. The best way is to search google with something along the lines of “how to get songs from ipod to computer” and see what results match with your ipod model. Ratings, playlists and playcounts are normally lost unless you still have/had the old computer to copy them from.

Edit: Since you want to get new songs onto the ipod, it will have to sync, which is why you have to add the songs into your iTunes library BEFORE syncing in order to not lose them. Aka do NOT sync your ipod until all the songs you want to keep are in your library. I can guide you in how to do this if you provide the exact iPod model.

Edit #2: I had a 4 gb nano before my music taste grew too large, and I tried the *third* method on this site. That worked for me and so it should work for you, though the other options might suit you better. ^_^
