pc world problems with repairs and warrenty?
Question by tony b: pc world problems with repairs and warrenty?
heya,i brought a desktop computer last year early june which broke down about 8 months into my warrenty and was repaired 3 times, after the last time it worked for about 4 months.then to my horror the same problem arose.now i rang pc world and they said basically tough luck my warrenty is up and i would have to pay.Now in my eyes they never actually really fixed the problem, more like masked it for a while.so im just wondering if any of you out there know what my next cause of action is.ive wrote a letter to packard bell explaining what has happend and that pc world are dragging their name down, but if i have any rights or anything like that to get this sorted.ias i really belive i shouldnt have to pay for a repair that i tried to get done while the warrent was in place, and basically they didnt do a proper job….thank you im in the uk

Its hard to help without knowing the specific problem, if its a hardware issue and is faulty then try the following….
Contact consumer direct.
Or…
write a letter, date it, send it recorded delivery, and make sure you have your own copy of the letter. Stating the issue you have, send this to their customer services or complaints dept and ask how long they deem an appropriate length of time for a computer to work, and ask them for a reply to this question as soon as possible and in writing.
I’m not sure where you live in the UK, each country is slightly different, but in scotland an electrical item such as this MUST work for 5 years (Abuse to the item is not covered though) regardless of warranty. It is then upto PC World, no one else, since the contract is with them, to arrange a repair, a replacement, refund or partial refund.
Consumer direct will give you more details and can be rather helpful. If you know what your doing, then its likely PC World will catch on, and not bother pushing their luck, because the next step is trading standards, and they can really cause a company problems.
Keep in mind though, this is if your computer has stopped working… full stop!

In addition to those manufacturer’s or retailer’s warranties you are referring to, you should also be entitled to statutory warranties. In your case, a statutory warranty entitles you to the right that the computer is of merchantable quality. A breach of that right may require the retailer that repair or replace the comptuer.
Whether the computer is actually of merchantable quality is not something I can answer.
