what you’re trying to do is more involved than you probably think. godaddy is easy. but if you really want to do it yourself, try Plesk (it’s free) or another open source server platform to get started.
First of all i have to say there are some good FREE Webhosting services. 000webhost is the best one i’d ever seen.Try to get an free account.(Just google it)
There features for free account is much enough for a personal site.
OOps…Making a server??? is some what complex but better to get the idea.
This is a good tutorial

So you say you want your computer to host the website. It can be done…. But you need the following:
You need to call your internet provider and ask for a “static IP”. This is the address to your cable modem. Right now, you have an address, but it changes often.
When you make a site, like http://www.enterwebsitenamehere.com, you have to register that .com name. When you register it, you are buying the rights to it, and you assign an address to that name. The address you assign to it will be the server the web site is hosted on. That is why you need a static IP address (static means it doesnt change). This can cost you.
After you get the address, you are going to have to make sure when people go to the address, the web site is what they get. Giving people your IP address to your computer can compromise your identity. Web hosts are a lot safer. There are hosts out there for 4 bucks a month.
Google “Best web hosts”. Use one of them and register a domain name.
If this is just some school project, use something like freewebs as a host. Or even google.com/sites Are you in high school? Its pretty ridiculous that a teacher would ask students to spend $60/yr to host a b.s. website.
Even at my college we used the college network “phobos” or google sites.
