How to set up win2003 enterprise server with 2 NICs, 2 routers, 2 internet, totally separate from each other?
Question by george.hungary: How to set up win2003 enterprise server with 2 NICs, 2 routers, 2 internet, totally separate from each other?
I’ve been using a windows 2003 ent. server for about a year with 10 workstations, 1 router, 1 dsl internet. I wanted to upgrade the speed of the internet but since the T1 line is too expensive I decided to separate my current network to two segments. I put in a second NIC in the server, got the second router with cable internet and separate wires from the computer room. Now I have 5 computers hooked up on a network with the dsl router and the server’s 1st NIC card and the other 5 computers with the cable net and other router hooked up to the same server’s second NIC. I’ve never done anything like thins before so I assumed I need to create 2 different doimain with separate forests so the 5 computers would be totally separate from the other 5. Basically I use the win2003 server only to issue the GPO to each computer (Limiting the user rights) and share some files from the server to the workstations. I don’t even use the dhcp server. SO this is supposed to be a very very simple network. All the users do is just surf the internet. I looked up online how to add a second domain in a new forest and I found that I have to start dcpromo app. I did that but what I see from here on is different from what I see in the tutorial. It’s telling me that I already have an active directory set-up and I can only remove it. I don’t want to remove it , I want to add an additional one. I’m clueless at this point. Can someone help me? I just need 5 computers using 1 dsl net with a router and 5 others the cable net with the other routers all this controlled by the win2003 server that issues the GPO to limit the user rights. Thank You in advance guys!!!

You should be able to do it at the transport layer. Your DSL modem has a wan and lan side. The wan side is given the IP address by your provider, the lan side will then have an non-routable ip address (example 192.168.2.1) Plug both routers into the dsl modem/router and assign them a wan IP in that subnet.
As example
dsl router
Wan IP
Provided by service provider.
Lan IP address Range
192.168.1.1 – 192.168.1.1 255,255.255.0
Router A
Wan IP
192.168.1.2 255.25.255.0
Lan IP range
192.168.2.1 – 192.168.2.255 255.255.255.0
All computers plugged into that router will then be on the 192.168.2.0 network
Router B
Wan IP Address
192.168.1.3 255.255.255.0
Lan IP Address
192.168.3.1 – 192.168.3.255 255.255.255.0
All computers plugged into that router will be on 192.168.3.0 network
Server Nics 192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x (x is number you assign)
Plug each nic into the router specific to its IP address
Each computer should then be able to browse the internet and also access the server.
